Tjelden hekkar langs heile norskekysten inkludert fjordane. Den har også etablert seg fleire stader med regelmessig innlandshekking slik at den no finst i alle fylka i landet
Minst 46 år var alderen på den eldste tjelden vi har funne opplysingar om. Denne vart ringmerka i Texel, Nederland 3. mars 1972 då den vart minst to år gamal. Den vart observert levande i månadsskiftet juli/august 2016 i Maasvlakte nær Rotterdam.
Den eldste tjelden funne i Norge med sikker datering vart 36 år og 8 mnd*. Denne vart ringmerka som ungfugl i 1969 i Lincolnshire, England og vart drept av rovfugl i Rogaland i 2006.
Tjelden vart vald av Norsk ornitologisk foreining til å vere årets fugl i 2018.
* Ringmerkingssentralen oppgjev i ‘Gjennfunnatlas online’ 37år og 27dg som rekord for eldste norske tjeld, men dette gjeld ein ring som vart funne i eit hubroreir og ein kan derfor ikkje fastlå sikker alder på denne fuglen.
